Dr. Janice W. Price

Owner, Director of Medicine

Family legend has it that Dr. Janice W. Price announced at the age of three, during a Christmas gathering, that she would become a veterinarian when she grew up. She can’t remember a time in her life when becoming an animal doctor wasn’t her singular goal—Dr. Price never even considered another career path! Now, she’s been a practicing veterinarian for almost 35 years and has adored every minute. She’s the proud owner and Director of Medicine here at Windmill Animal Hospital.

Dr. Price was born and raised in Houston as the youngest of three girls, where she started riding horses before she could even walk. She attended Texas A&M University to earn her undergraduate degree, graduating magna cum laude in 1979 before joining the school’s College of Veterinary Medicine the following fall. Dr. Price graduated as a licensed veterinarian in 1984 and launched her career in Houston—she would practice there for 12 years, eventually owning and operating a group practice comprised of three separate locations, before moving to the Dallas-Fort Worth area with her husband in 1996.

Dr. Price built a highly successful small-animal practice in Flower Mound in 1997, then fulfilled a lifelong dream when she sold the practice and moved to a ranch in the Big Country area in 2009 with the intention of retiring. It wasn’t long, though, before the draw of the veterinary world came calling once again. Dr. Price simply loved practicing medicine too much to stop! In 2010, she and her husband built their fifth practice here in Abilene—Windmill Animal Hospital opened its doors for business in September of 2011, and Dr. Price and her team have been offering their brand of compassionate pet care and dedicated client education to the area’s pet owners ever since.

At home, Dr. Price and her husband, Dale—a former airline captain who has always functioned as the de-facto Business Manager and I.T. Technician for Dr. Price’s veterinary practices!—spend much of their time completing chores on their ranch or spending time with their own animal companions. The couple has six German Shorthaired Pointers: Karla, whose claim to fame is her crowning as 2016’s National Amateur Gun Dog of the Year; mischievous Tyrel; Gidget, who wags her tail so much that it occasionally gets sore; Bella, an accomplished yodeler; Peanut, who drinks by putting his whole muzzle in the bowl; and PacMan, who considers chasing skunks a routine part of his job. Dr. Price and Dale also share their lives with four rescued cats named Baxter, Sylvester, Mason, and Virden.

Dr. Rebecca S. Barnhart

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Rebecca Barnhart’s early experiences with animals—as well as with the veterinarians who helped them to live happier, healthier lives—made a permanent impression. She’s always known that she wanted to do her part to help the earth’s creatures! Dr. Barnhart is proud to now serve the pets and animal owners of Abilene as an Associate Veterinarian.

Dr. Barnhart grew up in Somerset, Pennsylvania and earned her undergraduate degree in horse training and pre-veterinary medicine at a college in Ohio. After working as an Equine Technician in Gardnerville, Nevada, she enrolled at Texas A&M University to earn her Master’s degree in equine reproduction, then continued on at the University’s College of Veterinary Medicine to earn her Doctorate. Dr. Barnhart took her first job as an Associate Veterinarian at a mixed-animal and emergency clinic in Argyle, Texas and has been helping pets and animal parents ever since.

After relocating from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to Abilene in order to be closer to family, Dr. Barnhart was thrilled to join the Windmill Animal Hospital team in the summer of 2012. She’s particularly fond of educating her clients on the importance of proper pet care; for her, helping pet owners to understand every aspect of their companions’ care needs is the ultimate reward. Dr. Barnhart especially likes to get kids in the exam rooms involved with hands-on care!

In her time away from the office, Dr. Barnhart is an avid baker and loves to make decorated sugar cookies, cakes, and cupcakes. At home, she and her husband—Windmill Animal Hospital’s very own Dr. Kotzur—share their lives with their three boys: Ethan, Paxton, and Logan. The family also keeps a wide variety of pets. They have six Dachshunds; an English Bulldog; three outdoor cats named Simba, Skittles, and Jumpin’ Jellybean; a pair of snakes; three horses and two ponies; a miniature horse named Tony the Pony; two miniature donkeys; and 15 chickens that were raised from hatchlings.

Dr. Russell J. Kotzur

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Russell Kotzur grew up in the small farming community of McAllen, Texas, and wanted to be a farmer like his father until he enrolled in the FFA program in high school. That’s when he was exposed to the world of animal husbandry and decided that he wanted to pursue a career in pet care! Dr. Kotzur’s passion hasn’t wavered since—he couldn’t be happier to care for Abilene’s pets and animal owners here at Windmill Animal Hospital.

After high school, Dr. Kotzur moved to College Station to attended Texas A&M University, working as a Veterinary Assistant in Pharr, Texas during his summers off from school. In 2004, he started working as a Veterinary Technician at a practice in College Station, a position that he would hold for the next seven years throughout his undergraduate studies, Master’s degree coursework, and early veterinary schooling. Dr. Kotzur earned his Doctorate from Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011—becoming engaged to his wife, Windmill Animal Hospital’s own Dr. Barnhart, before graduation—and then moved to Argyle, Texas to launch his career in private practice.

Drs. Kotzur and Barnhart moved to Abilene to be closer to family, and she started here at Windmill Animal Hospital in 2012. In early 2015, Dr. Barnhart was preparing to go on maternity leave; who better to take her place than her husband? Dr. Kotzur has been a member of the hospital family ever since! He has a special interest in dentistry work, and also loves to visit with puppies and kittens—being able to take the time early on in a pet’s life to educate their owners is especially rewarding for Dr. Kotzur.

When he isn’t caring for pets here at the hospital or spending time with his wife, young sons, and animal companions on their 17-acre property, Dr. Kotzur enjoys racing hobby-grade RC cars and playing disc golf with his brother. He looks forward to the day he’ll be able to share his hobbies with his sons!
